Giganews recently announced they will be providing their customers with online storage ability through a service called Dump Truck. There are tons of online storage services out there, so I'm not really sure what Dump Truck will provide that is different than what you can already get.
I'm guessing that the selling point will be security. Given Giganews provides access to newsgroups... a file sharing (storage) service that many use as a (technically legal) alternative to Bittorrent... it's my guess that this will tie in to that somehow.
It will be interesting to see. I think the next step in online file sharing / storage is to mask all information tied to the user (IP addresses and the like). The service was developed by a company called Golden Frog, which seems to specialize in keeping your 'digital footprint' to a minimum, hence my speculation.
This is an interesting subject because obviously we don't want people to be able to be completely annonymous online. We want the police to be able to catch terrorists, pedophiles, scam artists, etc.
But at the same time, those who believe in a free and open internet, think that just like you can lend your neighbour your Spider-Man DVD, you should be able to share it over the Internet as well. Now obviously this tends to spiral out of control and you end up with the whole piracy issue. It does make me laugh how one person out of 7 billion people in the world can put a dvd online and within hours millions of people then have it also.
So we'll see what Dump Truck is all about when Giganews releases some more information (I have no clue what it will even cost). By the way, this was just a horrible product launch by GigaNews - could they have released any less information about the product? Yet another example of how companies let their products 'escape' in to the market, versus launching them gusto.
